Dr. Ernesto Basauri is a highly accomplished and internationally trained Vitreoretinal Surgery Consultant with over 30 years of experience in the field of Ophthalmology. He began his medical journey at the Universidad del País Vasco in Spain, earning his medical degree in 1986. He pursued further training in Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom, where he was trained and served as a Clinical Research Fellow at the renowned Institute of Ophthalmology in London. He achieved the Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth) in 1992 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) in 1993. He was granted the Certificate of Specialist Training (CST) in Ophthalmology by the General Medical Council (GMC) in 1994.
After gaining significant experience as a general ophthalmologist, Dr. Basauri pursued advanced subspecialty training through prestigious fellowships. These included a Clinical Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia (1997–1998), a Research Fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in the United States (1999), and a Clinical Vitreoretinal Fellowship at St Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada (2000–2001). These experiences equipped him with extensive expertise in managing complex retinal diseases and surgical interventions.
Throughout his career, Dr Basauri has held international surgical positions, including the St John Eye Hospital in East Jerusalem and the Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand.
He is currently based in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where he practices at Instituto Balear de Oftalmología (IBO). Being a partner during many years, has recently joined the MIRANZA group where he continues to serve both local and international patients with precision, compassion, and dedication. His work is characterized by a patient-centered approach and a continuous pursuit of innovation in Ophthalmic Surgery.
He is also a founding member of Anglo Spanish Ophthalmological Society (ASOS) and remains actively involved in the global ophthalmology community, contributing to training and mentoring younger surgeons, as well as engaging in ongoing clinical advancement in his specialty.
